The
Scottish All Rover Rally 2009 The late May bank holiday weekend saw a record number of cars converging on Thirlestane Castle for the 2009 running of the Scottish All Rover Rally. A total of 139 cars entered this year, and they enjoyed a superb weekend in the wonderful Scottish Borders, with open roads, warm hospitality and sunny weather. Our guests in 2008, the Wolseley Register, enjoyed their time with us so much they incorporated our rally into an extended weekend event of their own, and we were delighted to have a number of members of the Rover 75 & ZT Club join us for the first time. Bright and early on Saturday morning we arrived at Thirlestane Castle to prepare for the Border Rovers tour, which this year took us via the Moorfoot Hills to Innerleithen and on to a lunch stop at Peebles. After lunch the tour continued through the Cardrona Forest, past Traquair House, Selkirk and a final cross country leg back to Thirlestane Castle. The evening function at the castle was again a sell out, all the tickets having been snapped up by the early bookers. We enjoyed an excellent buffet and a very enjoyable evening, with Ian Tennant again acting as M.C. and quizmaster. As usual Kim Payne’s quiz generated plenty of head scratching and argument. The weather gods smiled on us again as Sunday was another bright and sunny day, with a light breeze to keep us pleasantly cool. By 10 o’clock the display areas were rapidly filling, and the marshals were soon wondering if there would be enough room for all the entrants. The Ex-Military Land Rover group arrived and set up a display complete with (dummy) minefield, and a convoy of Rover 75s arrived having collected members at various points along a route from Glasgow via Edinburgh to Lauder. The entrants soon took to the task of trying to complete their judging for the concours. With a total of 139 cars in 11 classes this was no mean task. With all the votes counted the class winners were brought together in the paddock and presented with their awards, and the committee announced the overall trophy winners. |
